"A rare, fresh look at environmental issues and sustainability...
Director Emmanuel Vaughan-Lee ties these threads together masterfully."
-John Fink, The Film Stage

Elemental tells the story of three individuals united by their deep connection with nature, confronting the most pressing ecological challenges of our time. The film follows Rajendra Singh, a former  Indian government official, on a 40-day pilgrimage down India’s once pristine Ganges river. Singh works to shut down factories, halt construction of dams, and rouse the Indian public to treat their sacred “Mother Ganga” with respect. In northern Canada, Eriel Deranger mounts her struggle against the world’s largest industrial development, the Tar Sands, an oil deposit larger than the state of Florida. A young mother and native Denè, Deranger struggles with family challenges while campaigning tirelessly against the Tar Sands and its proposed 2,000-mile Keystone XL Pipeline, which are destroying Indigenous communities and threatening an entire continent. And in Australia, inventor and entrepreneur Jay Harman searches for investors willing to risk millions on his conviction that nature’s own systems hold the key to our world’s ecological problems. Harmon finds his inspiration in the natural world’s profound architecture and creates a revolutionary device that he believes can slow down global warming.

Barcelona Comedy Festival

1st FIC FLIX - Inaugural edition

We are delighted to add a very cool comedy cinema programme to the FIC BCN '12 calendar and very cool it is too.
Barcelona is a hive of Short Movie production and screening backed up by a myriad of different short and full feature festivals covering every genre except comedy.
So only right we fill the void and we have put together an exciting mini programme to introduce the concept for our inaugural FIC FLIX which we hope to develop further in 2013.

All screenings this year will take place in the atmospheric cellar of Las Cuevas del Sorte

Ray Torr is an Irish writer, comedy enthusiast and gaelic games fanatic.

Remember you used to laugh - when you were younger like and not ravaged by the cynical beast that is time. These are dark times, but there is light at the end of the tunnel* Ray Torr's Comedy shorts will drop in on FIC BCN '12 and it will be funny, really funny and we're not telling you who's in it yet.
Irish comedy is not all about priests you know. No, there's other stuff.
Attend this fabulous one-off show to find out more. Night includes a short movie film quiz with top prize.

2. 'NATURAL BORN SATIRISTS' - A Showcase of US satire

Definition of SATIRE
  • the use of humour, irony, exaggeration, or ridicule to expose and criticize people’s stupidity or vices, particularly in the context of contemporary politics and other topical issues:
In November 2011, Catalan filmmaker Ignasi Boltó organized a showcase in four parts entitled “The Bill Hicks humor”
Following on from that event, Ignasi will collaborate with FIC BCN’12 to create some new screenings including more of comedy’s legendary voices from the genre at times we need more than most, satirical comedy.
“NATURAL BORN SATIRISTS” will focus on a different comic each night will include, subtitled V.O. screenings, introductions and bilingual discussion over three nights. The line up includes:

PART 1 - BILL HICKS - 'OUTLAW COMIC' - Wed Oct 3rd, 9pm

2003 Documentary of Bill Hick’s life, focusing on the censorship that pursued him throughout his career. The public wasn’t prepared for a comedian who pushed the boundaries way beyond their expectations.

A special FIC compilation of the work of  the 5 time grammy award winning, New York comedy genius. The screening will include a little biography, some of the best performances and some choice statements made in his greatest interviews from a man as quoted as Oscar Wilde.

PART 3 - BILL MAHER - 'RELIGULOUS' - Wed Oct 17, 9pm

Bill Maher’s hilarious documentary takes a look at the follies and often ridiculous aspects of organised religion in a unique, satirical and intelligent way. One of the many 'still living' and active satirists using the tools and tastes of a new generation to get their points across.

Each screening will be in V.O. with Spanish subtitles and  will include an

The goal of ¨NATURAL BORN SATIRISTS¨ is to introduce these great comics and their ideas to the uninitiated

For existing fans provide a reminder to inspire us to break free of the crippling social apathy that has engulfed us in this moment of crisis in Spain.

To quote the words on Hick’s headstone:

“I left in love, in laughter, and in truth and wherever truth, love and laughter abide, I am there in spirit”.
